Historic Military Rifle Match (24-JUN-2017)

Riverside Gun Club Historic Military Rifle Match
24 June 2017

RGC held the first match military rifle match since 2015. We questioned the weather and setting up a new match format. We turned this into a no fee “fun match” setting up two person teams. Turnout was perfect, with eight shooters and lots of visitors. We had young and not so young shooters, both ladies and guys. Firearms was a great mix, mostly World War 1 and 2 era, one going back the Civil War. Lots of neat stuff, with bolt, lever action and semi autos.

First Stage – With the moving up and down, plus going down range; safety was a must. We started out with no sighters. Using a 100 yard SR 1 target, shooters fired 10 shots each prone, sitting and standing. Time limit of 5 minutes for each position.

Second Stage – Using a reduced B27 style target at 100 yards. Four, two person teams shot 10 shots from prone. Moved together down range 75 yards, for 10 shots sitting. Then 50 yards to shoot last 10 shots standing. We all did this one minute each time.

Final Stage – Was a nasty sniper. Shooters first tried to put two shots into a reduced B27 target head. Team member spots on paper, to help make that one shot at the clay count. We all picked, a painted brown, green or gray clay pigeon target (hard to see). We used WW 2 era binoculars to select the right color target. One person spots on paper, to help make that one shot at the clay count. Then switch sides.

We older guys learned how much we’re out of shape and need practice. I feel we all enjoyed getting out our safe queens; having fun shooting and seeing others do the same.
